LCL has collaborated with Business Edge, industry experts in the air conditioning, refrigeration and heat pump industries, on a new high-level Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heat Pump (RACHP) qualification. The Level 3 Certificate in the Installation, Service and Maintenance of RACHP Systems will be available to a limited number of approved centres across the UK.
Who is the qualification for?
The Level 3 Certificate in the Installation, Service and Maintenance of RACHP Systems is a specialist certificate, designed for experienced engineers who are looking to develop and practice the skills required in the RACHP sector. The qualification focuses on the reduction of direct greenhouse gas emissions and improving the energy efficiency of stationary refrigeration equipment.
Approved by the MOD, the qualification is ELCAS funded as part of the Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme for ex-servicemen.
What does the new RACHP qualification cover?
F-Gas: The qualification will provide learners with the knowledge and skills to legally work with RACHP equipment that contains refrigerants classified as Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases (F-Gas). It covers the requirements set by Regulation (EU) 2015/2067 allowing engineers to work with ozone depleting refrigerants. Including flammable refrigerants categories A2L, A2 and A3 - in accordance with ACRIB specifications - the qualification also covers the safe use of all A1, CO2 high pressure systems.
In-line with the recent changes to the law regarding F-Gas, the qualification includes the installation, servicing, maintenance, recovery, checking and decommissioning of Category 1 Systems.
Electrical: The requirements of Electrical installations BS: 7671:2018 are also included. Designed to equip learners with the core skills necessary for the effective servicing and maintenance of RACHP electrical systems, the Level 3 certificate features the safe isolation of single and multi-phase systems.
Learners will also be taught how to carry out oxy-fuel brazing techniques specifically for RACHP systems.
Suggested course length
Commensurate with the involved nature of the subject and level of qualification, this course has been designed to run for 132 Guided Learning hours. Assessment will be made through simulated practical assessment within the training environment and further on-line assessment.

- LCL Level 3 Award in the Initial Verification and Certification of Electrical Installations
Is this right for my centre?
This specialist qualification will be made available to a limited number of approved centres. LCL has made a commitment to the MOD to ensure consistency of delivery across the country - centres interested in offering the qualification will need to undertake a ‘train the trainer’ session prior to approval.
