Funded Renewable Courses at Narec Distributed Energy

There is now a 97% consensus amongst climate scientists that humans are causing climate change. This, along with the fact that extraction of fossil fuels is becoming increasingly complex and costly, means there's growing demand for expertise in the renewable energy sector. Cleaner, greener energy sources must now become the focus, creating a pool of work for trained engineers, installing and maintaining renewable systems for both domestic and commercial applications.

Logic Certification approved centre, Narec Distributed Energy, has given heating engineers in the North East the chance to upskill into this important sector for free, with a range of Logic Certification renewable qualifications funded with money from the European Social Fund (ESF) and the Skills Funding Agency (SFA).

Narec Distributed Energy (NDE), based in the National Renewable Energy Centre in Blyth, Northumberland, has run Logic Certification renewable courses for over five years. In the last three months, NDE has put 30 funded individuals and around 15 commercial clients through the courses; Level 3 qualifications in heat pumps, solar thermal and solar photovoltaics.

Mike Broadbent, Renewable Energy Training Coordinator at NDE sees real potential:

"Due to the nature of the installations, it is a natural progression for a fully qualified plumbing and heating engineer to up-skill in this particular field. By gaining a recognised qualification in renewable installation you have the opportunity to increase workload and enhance your company profile. This can lead to winning contracts from Local Authorities and private investors who require these renewable technologies installed by fully qualified engineers."

Mark Blacklock and Richard Poulton of HLA Coolrite, one of the North East's leading air conditioning, refrigeration and catering equipment specialists recently attended the Principles of Metering course and were very impressed. They had been looking for a metering/solar thermal course for their engineers that focused on servicing and maintenance, not just installation. Although renewables currently constitute a small part of HLA's portfolio, the company is looking ahead and preparing itself for expansion when renewables policy becomes clearer post-Brexit.

Mark and Richard were particularly impressed with the practical, hands-on nature of the training they received at NDE. They found the fault-finding rigs and the dummy installations set up at the site particularly helpful and thought that the live installation was of great benefit as it gave them the opportunity to see and discuss what was happening as weather conditions changed.

"The course was delivered by someone who has been there and done it, which automatically makes you listen and pay more attention. We wouldn't hesitate to train with NDE again whether it's funded or unfunded."

Paul Mooney of Oakes Energy Services Limited based in Castle Eden, near Hartlepool, was another attendee. He wanted to expand his knowledge of the regulations and safety requirements surrounding the metering of renewable heating systems and have the opportunity to practice various metering scenarios. He'd been recommended the course by Mitsubishi Heating and thought it was excellent.

Terry Skee of Renewables R Us has an eye to the future. His company takes the potential of renewables seriously - and the responsibility we hold in taking care of energy provision for future generations. He decided to take the metering course in order to attract potential clients with a formal qualification. Terry intends to use the qualification on his CV, his LinkedIn profile, company website, and for tendering purposes.

Asked about the delivery of the course, he said:

"It was relaxed, yet professional. There was plenty of time for interaction between the attendees, which is unusual in training like this. It was a really good way to informally reinforce what was being taught."

For building services businesses in the North East, training with NDE using the funding initiatives available makes sound commercial sense, while helping the UK's overall moves to a greener energy future.
