Logic Certification helps new academy get smart!

Logic Certification has joined forces with the UK’s leading provider of metering services, CH4 Services, helping the firm to become fully accredited to deliver its QCF Level 2 Diploma in Smart Metering Power.

The qualification was launched in response to an industry need to meet the demand for the installation of 50 million smart gas and electricity meters in 27 million homes by 2020. The launch of the smart metering academy now means that CH4 Services is able to directly address the gap within the sector for trained smart meter operatives, both increasing their existing workforce’s opportunities and opening up potential for new entrants.

Commenting on the link-up, David Burke, business development manager for CH4 Services, explained: “We were looking to partner with an awarding body that could help us set up the training academy without overwhelming us with teaching ‘jargon’; a partner who had the same ethos and culture that mirrored our own, in terms of valuing best practice with a view to producing excellent results from all learners that pass through the academy. After we met the Logic Certification team, we knew they were the kind of people we could, and wanted to, work with.

“We have been in the metering business for some time and, as such, we have been part of the early developments in smart for a while. As the industry set new standards to become SMICoP compliant (from a meter workers competence perspective) it became clear that there will be a huge requirement to train new entrants and up-skill our own workforce to meet the needs of the programme; it was an obvious strategic move for our business.

“Smart metering is just the beginning of the smart home whereby many new technological advances will come to market, with the smart meter as the brains of the home, allowing the consumer to change settings remotely, and easily.

“Logic Certification’s qualifications fit our strategy moving forward as well as the requirements under SMICoP. The delivery of the sessions flow nicely, they provide excellent support, are very approachable and will always do their best to help. We’ve had our first batch of learners through who successfully passed, which is a great achievement to learners, trainers and assessors, who have all had to go through a period of learning to become qualified.”

Mark Krull, director at Logic Certification, added: “We are delighted to have helped CH4 Services develop their business further into the smart metering sector. Smart meter technology is to play a huge part in the future of our homes, giving consumers the means to better control, and understand, their consumption of energy. What’s important right now is that training facilities are geared up and ready to offer the appropriate smart metering qualifications to support the industry and develop a workforce of highly competent operatives.”

The qualification is designed to equip learners with all they need to install and exchange gas and/or power smart meters in domestic properties; it is also suitable for existing installers looking to up-skill. There are common units for gas, power or dual fuel units, as well as additional units depending on the type of smart meter candidates wish to specialise in. Focusing on working in the Energy and Utilities Sector, common units are as follows:

  • Working practices
  • Working safely
  • Using and communication technical information
  • Delivering customer service
  • Install and commission communication systems for smart meters
